Post weekly goals! Give it a try, just once. I promise it will really
help keep you on track with your current projects. Send out the GOAL POST
every week by Saturday. Make it a habit to start posting your goals with
us.

My goals for last week and progress report...

1. Do the newsletter for Southwest Washington Writers.
I'm not responsible for this one not being done. I wasn't given the
material to work with.

2. Locate artwork for the September issue.
Believe me, I've tried. And I'll KEEP trying but don't be too surprized
to see a text cover one of these months. ;-)

3. Write and/or polish several bird articles.
I did write ONE bird article. I still need to rewrite it a couple of
times and I need to take some pictures but they take considerable time
to set up. I did buy the film already though.

4. Attend screening program at the Employment Security Department.
ROFL. I got the name of the place written down next to the address of a
different place; I ended up at the WRONG place. So I called and I have
to go in on this Monday. Sheesh. I need to check my facts better. ;-)

My goals for this week are to...

1. Make my appointment on Monday, this time.

2. Get three of my kids safely to grandpa's 200 miles a way. They are
staying for a whole week. YEAH! This is like my first VACATION since
my mother died.

3. Try to entertain my youngest son all week while the other kids are gone.

4. Keep working on the September issue. It should be a nice one.

5. Do the club newsletter, IF someone brings by the material.

On a personal note:

It's been a LONG week. So many errands to run, so much to do... But I
think I've made a lot of progress.
I've also had some unsettling health problems that have me quite worried.
I think I may have to break down and get myself to a doctor, just-in-case.
My husband is getting a pick-up truck today. A very OLD pick-up truck
but it's been rebuilt all over the place and he's happy. We'll be a two car
family again after having NO car for over a year and only one car since 1988.
The kids, all but the youngest one, will be gone for over a week so my
husband and I and DJ are going to the ocean next weekend. I'm so excited!
It's been a very long time. We'll only be able to stay overnight one night
but we can roam around on the beach for two days. I'm really looking forward
to it.
I received a copy of an article of mine that was published in a small
press magazine, a nice small press 'zine. I'd forgotten I'd submitted the
piece. It looked really nice and I got a little over a one-and-a-half page
spread. So I dug out an article I'd used in WWR under a pen name once and
sent IT out to the editor too. Might as well get some milage out of the
piece.

Condensed Guidelines

If anyone reading this is interested in submitting to Writer's
Workshop Review, you are more than welcome to do so. We are open to any
genre except porn, fiction or non-fiction are both welcome.
Please keep your submissions down under 1,500 words. We are in
need of fillers. WWR needs MY WORST REJECTION and MY FIRST PUBLICATION
pieces. Submissions for these should be kept down to 500 words. If you
have something to contribute to this new section, please do so ASAP.
Other sections needing submissions are: WORDS OF WISDOM, NETWORK NEWS,
YOUNG AUTHOR'S KORNER (material written by kids 15 and under), MARKET NEWS &
COMPUTER TEK TIPS.
WWR looks for SOFTWARE REVIEWS, reviews on writing related books, how-to
articles about writing or computer use, ART WORK, especially cover art and
humor art, anything else of interest to writers and their families. We love
humor stories.

DREAMS, is the story of three women. Two are caught in a sticky
web of terror created by the third.
RENE GODDARD is a women who's life goal was to have one person
to love her and only her. When she realized that she would never get
her wish, she devised a demented plan to fake her only daughter's death,
a plan that gave her four years alone with Jean.
JEAN GODDARD was forced into seclusion by her mother. No one
suspects that she is alive. Unable to take the torture of being her
mother's prisoner and holding out little hope of escape, she
counterfeits being in a catatonic state.
ROSE FLANDERS has been plagued by recurring dreams for the past
four years, since being blamed for her cousin's death and forced into an
isolation from most of her family members. Each night, Rose sees Jean
laughing, talking and most of all, breathing. Could Jean still be alive?
In an attempt to dispel the disturbing dreams forever, her psychologist
insists that Rose confront the people and places in her dreams. In the
process, she stumbles upon some UNSPEAKABLE family secrets; a discovery
which could cost her her life unless she can manage to escape the
clutches of her murderous aunt.
I am seeking professional representation for my "Women In
Jeopardy" novel, DREAMS, and was drawn to your listing in the 1994 Guide
To Literary Agents. I have been a freelance writer for the past seven
years and have many publishing credits in various newspapers across the
country. Writing full time since December of 1992, I began attempting
to break into the magazine markets and have done quite well. I am now
editor of Writer's Workshop Review, a small press writers' magazine that
is becoming very successful.

A good query should be only one page, single spaced.
If you have little or no writing experience, use that space to
tell how you researched your topic or to tell something about your
hobbies, interests or home life. (How many kids, how long married,
etc...) You can use this basic outline for queries to magazine editors,
newspaper editors or book publishers and what have you. Just tailor it
to fit your needs.

You know what happens when you talk about the ocean? I get VERY
homesick for MY ocean! ;-) I just talked to my husband and we are going to
go to the ocean for two days while all the other kids are gone to stay at
grandpa's! We will go down on the 11th and 12th! Thanks for the nudge!

Dominique,

What I love about our beaches is that you can walk for miles and only
occasionally see another person close-up enough to see what they look like.
It's so quiet there. All you hear is the roar of the waves crashing in. Oh
how I love the ocean!

Unfortunately, the check isn't going to have the numbers on it that I'd
imagined would be standard numbers coming from a full color glossy
publication! In fact, I got paid better writing for the little regional farm
weekly that gave me my first publishing break. But I need color credits and
color photography credits, so... It's a start anyway.

Dominique,

Sounds like you are keeping very busy. I don't suppose you'd want to
swap lives? ROFL No, I don't think you are quite THAT foolish. ;-) I'd love
to be writing for a few weeklies though. I miss the quick turn-over time on
my articles that I used to get writing for the weekly in my home town.
I'm working on a new article, a requested one. I've got to discuss
payment with the editor again though because what I'm getting paid doesn't
even cover my time, let alone my expenses. At this point, the only reason I
keep turning out material is to keep current publishing clips in my portfolio.

On an unrelated topic... yesterday our landlord came by and brought me
three big boxes of canning jars and a bird cage. Then he told me that some
people had moved out of a rental and would I like to pick through the things
they'd left for the good will. Oooh! Picking through other people's junk!
One of my favorite things to do! I got a lot of nice things but my personal
favorite is a big glass ball with Santa inside, it snows when you shake it.
And there's a music box in the base. I love it! I collect Christmas
decorations so this is a special treat. It was just like Christmas here
yesterday. ;-) Except hotter. :-| Picking through just is just above
shopping yard sales on my list of fun things to do.

Hey! Being nosey is the only way I find out anything! <chuckle>

I always feel "nosey" when I start quizzing people for my articles...but
I've gotten used to the feeling. Doesn't really phase me any more...

Check? Did you mention check? Got one of those today...the paper's
gotten on a fairly regular payment schedule with me this year. Still a
little slower than I'd like, but it's a improvement over the sporadic
payments I got last year.

Hmmmmmm....think I'm all the way out to setting goals for the week of
July 29 now...

1) Finish collecting material for September Chamber newsletter...I've
already started putting a couple things in the computer, and I have an
appointment (tomorrow--Friday, July 28) with the Chamber director to
work on the front page story (about a new membership services program
for the group).

2) Newspaper articles...I'm set to talk to the editor tomorrow to see
what he needs next week (turned in two articles earlier today--the
wedding consultant business and the new pizza joint). BTW--our biggest
weekly of the four (30,000 circulation) just went to a twice weekly
schedule...a move we were going to make in September, but it was
accelerated due to strikes at the two major dailies in Detroit). My
editor mentioned wanting to talk to me about submitting some material
for the Thursday editions...and I let him know I'd love to do something
a bit different from my usual business stories. The Thursday paper is
more of a weekend/feature publication (TV listings, concert news,
cooking articles, automotive articles).
I've been looking for the opportunity to do something other than
business stories...with an eye towards entertainment feature-type
articles. We'll see if there's anything available along those lines
with the paper...meanwhile, I've been thumbing through my Writers'
Market...

3) Send for sample copies and writers' guidelines from at least six
markets. I've got three or four marked in my WM now...I've got the
envelopes and stamps in hand...all I need is another free hour to pick a
couple more markets and send out the requests.

....

This week's been a little lethargic...the heat and humidity here is
oppressive...and my AC wasn't working (sleeping in humid, 85+ degree
heat isn't possible for me). We've tried beating the AC unit into
submission...and it now seems to be cooling a bit...at least it's
drawing some of the humidity out of the air <sigh>

I've managed a few little errands (sending out a disc of JPEGs to an
online friend who asked us to scan some of his pictures, ordering a new
address plate for the house, ordering a new pump for my indoor fountain,
getting most of my vacation pix back).

Unpacking...welllll....it's getting done a bit at a time.

Meanwhile, we've been pretty busy at work...we had a particularly bad
crisis early in the week, which seems to have been resolved (but it took
a lot of everyone's time these past few days).

Took my friend into the hospital for her out-patient surgery on
Tuesday...and managed to write two long-owed snail mail letters while I
waited for her (sent 'em out, too <g>).

the weeklies actually *pay*...mebbe not much, but usually *something*
