.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 110 AM EDT Fri Sep 25 2026

Light showers have ended across the area. The drying and cooling
trend is set to begin. A closed low just off of the mid-Atlantic
coast will slowly drift north as upper level ridging moves in from
the west, centering over the middle of the country into the
weekend and the first full week of October. Under the upper low,
coastal storm impacts are being felt across much of the Atlantic
coast. Our area will be situated under high pressure with no
precipitation in the forecast until maybe the end of the forecast
period when another closed upper low/shortwave barrels east from
CA and the desert SW. Of course, there are discrepancies this far
out as to what will happen and when.

Under lower heights aloft from the coastal system and surface high
pressure, temperatures will be running close to or just below normal
for end of September and early October. A very welcomed thing to
those tired of daily storms and record setting hot temperatures. Far
northeastern parts of the CWA this morning may see lows in the 40s
for the first time in a while. Drier air will continue filtering in,
which will allow much cooler temperatures tomorrow morning and
especially Sunday morning. 40s for lows could sink as far south as
the I-40 corridor, excluding the Southern Appalachians. As ridging
is allowed to edge a bit more east following the exit of the coastal
upper low early next week, as well as surface high pressure moving
to our east, warmer temperatures will begin increasing each day
starting on Monday. Valley temperatures at the end of the forecast
period will return to the mid to upper 80s and possibly more humid
conditions.

Low clouds and possibly some patchy fog will be around early in
the period, with the low clouds (MVFR) most likely to impact CHA
with a lower chance at TYS, and the best chance for fog at TRI.
Once the low clouds and any fog depart during the morning, we will
see VFR conditions for the remainder of the period.

the Southern New England on Saturday and Sunday...

Upper-level energy and moisture moving northwestward from the Gulf will
produce showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain over parts of the
Southern High Plains on Friday. Therefore, the WPC has issued a Slight
Risk (level 2/4) of excessive rainfall with these thunderstorms over parts
of the Southern High Plains. The associated heavy rain will create mainly
localized areas of flash flooding, with urban areas, roads, small streams,
narrow canyons/gullies, and burn scars the most vulnerable. The threat of
heavy rain will end on Saturday over this portion of the country. Showers
and thunderstorms will continue over parts of the Southern Rockies,
Southern High Plains, and Central Plains through early Saturday morning.
As moisture continues to stream northward over the Plains, showers and
thunderstorms will develop over parts of the Central/Southern Plains and
the Upper/Middle Mississippi Valley on Saturday into Sunday morning.

In addition, a front moving over the Pacific Northwest will produce rain
with embedded thunderstorms over the Northwest into the Northern
Intermountain Region with snow at the highest elevations on Friday.

Moreover, low pressure off the Mid-Atlantic Coast will move northward to
near Southern New England on Saturday into Sunday. The system will produce
heavy rain over portions of New England on Saturday and Sunday. Therefore,
the WPC has issued a Slight Risk (level 2/4) of excessive rainfall with
heavy rain over parts of Southern New England on Saturday and Sunday.

western and upland areas early. Temperatures will range from about 11 to 17?C,
coolest inland and warmest near the coast and islands.

Moderate to fresh west-southwest winds will strengthen through the day, locally
windy on exposed coasts and islands. Gusts will generally reach 36-49 kph,
strongest later and offshore. Rainfall totals will mostly be 2-5 mm, with around

Currently a few lingering showers across parts of the plateau and
the southern Appalachian Mountains early this afternoon. We should
continue to see these slowly work their way through the region as
the trough also swings through overhead... No major impacts are
expected from these showers and few thunderstorms.

More notable is that it's turned much cooler today and even with the
sun trying to come out it's going to feel like fall with
temperatures much lower than the previous weeks. This fall like
weather will continue through the weekend with mostly clear skies
and lower dew points. Rain chances don't look to return until at
least the middle of the week next week. A low and front look to try
and move through the US, but models disagree with the timing and the
strength. But that's a problem for next week, in the meantime enjoy
the weather for the next several days.

...A strong coastal low will bring coastal flooding, rip currents, wind
gusts, and heavy rain along the East Coast into the weekend..

...Heavy rainfall/flooding threat from Arizona to the central High Plains
through tonight will begin to gradually lessen on Friday...

An upper-level trough digging into the eastern U.S. will interact with a
cool air mass sliding east into the western Atlantic to develop a deep
coastal cyclone just off the East Coast over the next few days. The
cool air will be moistened and lifted by the digging upper trough as a
large high pressure system feeds that cool air across the still warm
waters of the western Atlantic. The result will be a rather strong
cyclone that will bring widespread strong to gale-force winds up the East
Coast of the U.S. through the next few days. Considerable uncertainty
remains regarding this cyclone's track, but models agree that the cyclone
center will approach and then stall just off southeastern New England
Friday and into the weekend. Much of Friday could remain rain free along
the East Coast but cool and damp northeasterly winds will continue to
strengthen as the storm deepens offshore. Steady rain may hold off until
Friday night across southeastern New England before spreading gradually
westward into southern New England by Saturday morning. Additionally,
expect wind gusts in excess of 45 mph, moderate to major coastal flooding,
high surf, rip currents, and beach erosion. Please see the latest WPC Key

Meanwhile, monsoonal moisture across the Four Corners will be lifted ahead
of an upper-level trough moving onshore into Baja California, bringing a
moderate risk of flash flooding over south-central New Mexico and a slight
risk of flash flooding through the southern Rockies to the southern High
Plains through tonight. The associated plume of moisture will gradually
shift east together with the upper trough, allowing the heavy rain threat
to gradually diminish on Friday for the southern Rockies to the southern
High Plains. However, a slight risk of excessive rainfall is forecast for
southeastern New Mexico due to saturated soils from previous
rainfall. Friday into Saturday morning should see moderate to locally
heavy rain developing and meandering over the central Plains toward Iowa
and Missouri ahead of a low-pressure wave and a stationary front.

A strong Pacific shortwave will deepen as it moves into the Pacific
Northwest late today. The strong dynamics associated with this system will
result in widespread showers across Washington and Oregon reaching the
coast later today and through the interior Pacific Northwest on Friday.
With the arrival of cooler air, wet snow may occur over the highest
elevations within the northern Rockies and Cascades.

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of America:

Active Systems:
The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Tropical
Storm Fay, located several hundred miles southwest of the Azores.

Far Eastern Tropical Atlantic (AL90):
A broad area of low pressure located a few hundred miles
south-southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands is producing a large
area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms. This system could
become a short-lived tropical depression or a tropical storm later
today or on Friday while it moves northwestward to northward.
Increasing upper-level winds, however, should prevent further
development by the weekend. Interests in the Cabo Verde Islands
should monitor the progress of this system as gusty winds, areas of
heavy rain, and flash flooding are possible over the islands by
Friday.

THE TEXAS PANHANDLE INTO NORTHWEST OKLAHOMA...

...SUMMARY...
A couple of marginally severe thunderstorms are possible late this
afternoon into the early evening across parts of the southern High
Plains.

...Synopsis...
A relatively amplified large-scale pattern will exist over the
CONUS, with south-central U.S. upper ridging flanked by an evolving
upper trough along the Eastern Seaboard and an amplifying upper
trough approaching the coastal Pacific Northwest.

...TX Panhandle into northwest OK...
A belt of moderately strong southwesterly mid-level flow will reside
over the southern High Plains downstream of an upper trough over AZ
and northwest Mexico. A moisture plume is evident in early morning
surface observations (mid 60s to near 70 deg F) and GPS PW sensors
extending from the middle coast of TX northwestward into the eastern
part of the TX Panhandle. A mid to high-level cloud canopy,
extending from the sub-tropical Pacific through the eastern portion
of the larger-scale upper trough, will continue to overspread the
northwestern envelop of richer moisture over the southern High
Plains. Coincidentally with this mid to upper-level moisture and
episodic shower/thunderstorm activity, mid-level lapse rates will
remain modest and stronger boundary layer heating will likely be
partially thwarted, especially with westward extent. Nonetheless,
models show around 1000 J/kg MLCAPE developing by mid afternoon over
northwest TX into western OK. Southeasterly low-level flow veering
to southwesterly and strengthening to 25-30 kt at 500-mb will
support some updraft organization potential, and the possibility for
a couple of weak supercells to develop later this afternoon. The
notion for a couple of semi-organized cells is seemingly supported
by recent MPAS and REFS-based guidance from near the Caprock
northeastward through northwest OK and perhaps adjacent portions of
KS.
