The program will usually spit out a RTE of "divide by zero", even on a fast computer. Those patches are most likely notthe issue. NTVDM is lousy for running DOS programs reliably after Windows 7. That's why I ran OS/2 for so many years: it does DOS better than DOS does DOS.
