My recollection of that age, 12-14, was that I was more interested in
girls than a lot of my male classmates.  I was also about as tall as I am
now and taller than most kids in class.  Unfortunately, that did not
improve my popularity one bit!
 
Looking back I wish I had been more like my nephew and not got interested
in them until I was much older.  I wasted a lot of time that could have
been spent on other, much more worthwhile things.
 
As I got older, one can add "...and money" to the list of things wasted.
